U-Battery is participating in the second phase of the UK Government's Advanced Modular Reactor Competition, through which in July 2020 it was awarded GBP10 million of funding to initiate design and development work.
The deployment of these plants by 2026, which represents an investment of €1.5 billion, will contribute to the development in France of a value chain for the production and recycling of batteries for electric vehicles, as well as to French autonomy in the supply of strategic materials.
U-Battery has now begun expanding its design and licensing team in preparation for the next stage of development. In December 2017, the UK Government reassessed the direction of its small modular reactor (SMR) competition and developed a new framework for the advanced modular reactor (AMR) programme, part of the Energy Innovation Portfolio.
The conceptual design was developed by the Universities of Manchester (UK) and Delft (Netherlands) after the project was initiated by Urenco, a global leader in the nuclear industry. U-Battery has always been a commercially-focussed, market-led development, intended to compete with other non-nuclear options.
Under the terms of the agreements, Orano and XTC New Energy will combine their expertise to set up two production plants on a single industrial site in Dunkirk, in France's Hauts-de-France region. The first plant, majority-owned by XTC New Energy, is intended to manufacture Cathode Active Materials (CAM).
