The present work reviews energy storage systems with a potential for offshore environments and discusses the opportunities for their deployment. The capabilities of the storage solutions are examined and mapped based on the available literature. Selected technologies with the largest potential for offshore deployment are thoroughly analysed.
However, the current market mechanisms are not conducive to the proper cost-sharing of energy storage and are difficult to support the large-scale investment and operation of future new energy storage projects in China.
The main conclusions of this study are as follows: 1) Analysis of typical foreign power systems shows that improved market mechanisms and reasonable policy subsidies are essential for the economic viability of energy storage projects.
However, policy and regulatory frameworks can enable jurisdictions to develop locally appropriate energy storage projects and place energy storage on a more level playing field with conventional grid solutions.
