By 2030, as much as 80% of electricity could flow through power electronic devices. One type of power electronic device that is particularly important for solar energy integration is the inverter. Inverters convert DC electricity, which is what a solar panel generates, to AC electricity, which the electrical grid uses.
Integrating solar field with the bottom cycle, the output power of the bottom cycle will be increased with the rising of solar energy input [ 19 ]. While, for a selected steam turbine, the maximal output power is constant, thus the penetration of solar energy integrated into the combined cycle is always restricted [ 20 ].
However, the intermittent nature of renewable power generation, such as photovoltaic and wind power, has prompted concerns regarding power grid stability. To balance such fluctuations, energy storage systems or other flexible power generation technologies should be integrated.
As a peak regulation technique, the integration of an ISCC system with a PV or wind system has the potential to provide improved power output stability and thermal efficiency with the large-scale grid-connected power generation of wind and photovoltaic power plants.
