CO 2 emissions could also be reduced by recycling solar PV waste which will consequently pose substantial positive impact on the environment.
Increased PV utilization and continued production increases have translated to burgeoning PV waste generation as they reach PV end-of-life. As a result, the focus on processes to treat waste PVs in anticipation of the large quantities of waste, are coming into focus.
Sectors like PV recycling will be essential in the world's transition to a sustainable, economically viable and increasingly renewables-based energy future. To unlock the benefits of such PV end-of-life industries, the institutional groundwork must be laid in time to meet the expected surge in panel waste.
The worldwide ratio of solar PV waste to new installations is expected to increase considerably over time as shown in Fig. 8. It will reach between 4% and 14% of total generation capacity by 2030 and approximately rise over 80% by 2050.
