Learn MoreHigh temperatures can significantly affect the performance of photovoltaic (PV) panels by reducing their efficiency and power output. This paper explores the consequential effect of various rooftop coverings on the thermal performance of photovoltaic (PV) panels.
Rooftop photovoltaic panels can serve as external shading devices on buildings, effectively reducing indoor heat gain caused by sunlight. This paper uses a numerical model to analyze rooftop photovoltaic panels' thermal conduction, convection, and radiation in hot summer areas as shading devices.
Thus, along with photovoltaic solar roof panels of planar and concentrator designs, thermal photovoltaic solar roof panels are of great interest in view of increased solar cell electrical efficiency and warm water at the outlet, which also increases the overall module efficiency.
The considered solar roof panels are manufactured with laminating and encapsulating technologies with a two-component polysiloxane compound. The physical and energy characteristics of the developed roof panels are given for the test results. The design of solar photovoltaic thermal tile is presented to increase solar cell efficiency.
The shading effect of the photovoltaic panels makes the roof temperature in the shading area higher than that in the unshaded area. This is because the photovoltaic panels store a certain amount of heat during the day when the irradiation is abundant, radiating heat with the shading area at night, causing its temperature to rise.
In the absence of photovoltaic (PV) panels, the heat absorbed by a cool roof (characterized by high reflectivity) is reduced by 65.6% compared to a conventional roof (with low reflectivity). However, once PV panels are installed, the disparity in heat gain between roofs with varying reflectivity levels is narrowed to approximately 10%.
