When I charge a car battery I usually undo the caps but leave them sitting on top of the cells. This has the advantage that it reduces evaporation as the vapours can collect on the bottoms of the caps and drip back into the cells, and there is no risk of a pressure build-up in the event of one of the vent holes in a cap being blocked as the cap will just momentarily lift up

Learn MoreA lead–acid battery cannot remain at the peak voltage for more than 48 h or it will sustain damage. The voltage must be lowered to typically between 2.25 and 2.27 V. A common way to keep lead–acid battery charged is to apply a so-called float charge to 2.15 V.
Gassing introduces several problems into a lead acid battery. Not only does the gassing of the battery raise safety concerns, due to the explosive nature of the hydrogen produced, but gassing also reduces the water in the battery, which must be manually replaced, introducing a maintenance component into the system.
The battery should not, therefore, be discharged below this voltage. In between the fully discharged and charged states, a lead acid battery will experience a gradual reduction in the voltage. Voltage level is commonly used to indicate a battery's state of charge.
A lead acid battery consists of a negative electrode made of spongy or porous lead. The lead is porous to facilitate the formation and dissolution of lead. The positive electrode consists of lead oxide. Both electrodes are immersed in a electrolytic solution of sulfuric acid and water.
The discharge state is more stable for lead–acid batteries because lead, on the negative electrode, and lead dioxide on the positive are unstable in sulfuric acid. Therefore, the chemical (not electrochemical) decomposition of lead and lead dioxide in sulfuric acid will proceed even without a load between the electrodes.
Lead-acid batteries are widely used due to their many advantages and have a high market share. However, the failure of lead-acid batteries is also a hot issue that attracts attention.
