Learn MoreThe present work covers developing a Capacitive Discharge Welding device for thermocouple fixing and assessing possible temperature acquisition positions in keyhole laser welding. The study performed all tests with a fiber laser of 9 kW power and 3 m/min scanning speed.
Various methods are available, but the Capacitance Discharge Welding (CDW) is the most widely used due to its simplicity. Hickson initially introduced this method. It consists of an electrically charged capacitor bank, in which one pole is connected to the test plate and the other to the thermocouple.
Monitoring can be performed at specific points through transducers. The typical one is the thermocouple. In laser welding processes, due to the high energy concentration of the beam, the acquisition with thermocouples should be performed closer to the bead when compared to electric arc welding processes.
Thermocouple positioning is essential to understanding laser welding through thermal cycle correlation with microstructure or numerical validation. The present paper develops a CDW circuit for thermocouple fixing. Besides, it assesses possible positions as a function of spatters and target temperature (727 °C).

Procedia CIRP 74:475–480 Zhang MJ, Chen GY, Zhou Y et al (2013) Observation of spatter formation mechanisms in high-power fiber laser welding of thick plate.
One pole from the capacitor bank is fixed to the test plate, while the other is attached to the thermocouple. When the capacitor voltage reaches the power source voltage (complete loading), the switch SW1 opens, and then the energy stored in the capacitor is applied for thermocouple discharge welding.
