This sets new industry records for single cell capacity and highest energy density for lithium batteries, Talent said in a statement. For comparison, Nio's (NYSE: NIO) 150-kWh semi-solid-state battery pack uses cells from Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology, with a capacity of 360 Wh/kg.
Solid-state batteries offer potential benefits such as higher energy density and reduced susceptibility to fires. At the material level, the higher energy density of the cell results from the introduction of a thin lithium-metal anode together with a sufficiently thin solid electrolyte separator.
“We believe that our newly developed material for solid-state batteries can make a significant contribution to the energy transformation of society. We will continue the development towards early commercialisation,” said TDK's chief executive Noboru Saito.
The “SOLiDIFY” consortium, composed of 14 European research institutes and partners, developed a battery with a pouch cell with an energy density of 1,070 Wh/L, compared to 800 Wh/L in standard lithium-ion batteries. The consortium created a pouch cell with an energy density of 1,070 Wh/L at EnergyVille, a Belgian research laboratory.
