The bottom-up BESS model accounts for major components, including the LIB pack, the inverter, and the balance of system (BOS) needed for the installation.
Figure ES-2 shows the overall capital cost for a 4-hour battery system based on those projections, with storage costs of $245/kWh, $326/kWh, and $403/kWh in 2030 and $159/kWh, $226/kWh, and $348/kWh in 2050.

It found that as of February 2024, a 2-hour duration turnkey BESS in China cost an average of US$115/kWh, a 43% decrease from a year before.
Battery storage costs have evolved rapidly over the past several years, necessitating an update to storage cost projections used in long-term planning models and other activities. This work documents the development of these projections, which are based on recent publications of storage costs.

Capex reductions are good for the long-term pipeline of battery energy storage in GB, but in 2024 buildout has been slower than expected. The amount of new capacity added per quarter increased throughout 2023, with over 1.5 GW of new BESS capacity coming online throughout the year.
