Solar PV: The Policy Context 9. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is a mature, proven technology and is a reliable source of renewable energy with an important role to play in the UK...
Learn MoreSolar PV policy is not without its challenges. In particular, solar PV deployment requires careful consideration to ensure appropriate use of land and buildings, and ensures that the views of local communities are heard (see page 24).
Incentives and policies applied in photovoltaic systems include feed-in tariff, self-consumption surplus energy, VAT exemptions in installations, research and development incentives in technology production, portfolio standards, projects, and large-scale installation tenders, etc. There are many studies in the literature examining these incentives.
9. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is a mature, proven technology and is a reliable source of renewable energy with an important role to play in the UK energy generation mix.
At the moment, incentives are necessary as solar PV is yet to become competitive with other energy sources in the UK. The Government has put in place a range of incentives and support mechanisms to support solar PV (which vary in applicability and detail across the Devolved Administrations).
As was highlighted in the Task 3 report of the Ecodesign Preparatory Study, increasing residential deployment of solar PV systems is a major challenge. Households wishing to install a solar PV system face a number of possible barriers, depending on the local context in each Member State.
The public sector has a substantial stock of buildings and land on which solar PV could potentially be installed. Once a decision has been made to procure solar PV systems the potential influence on the design and specification of components is direct in most cases.
