If the battery type (AGM, EFB, etc.) and the Ah rating is the same as the original battery all you need to do is change the serial number by 1 digit - that will be enough to tell the BEM that a new battery of the same construction and rating has been fitted. My rule-of-thumb is to pop the bonnet and look at the negative battery terminal - if it has a Battery Monitor control module (J367 on the WD -see picture below) - then it's probably wise to code the new battery information into the Gateway module because the car has an enhanced version of Energy Management System (EMS).
The conclusion that appears to be generally reached it that IF the battery type and rating is the same then over a period of time the BMS will IN MOST BUT NOT ALL cases work out that a new battery has been fitted, but in the meantime things like start/stop may not work correctly.
As per their own instructions for non BEM coded batteries I changed only the final digit on the battery serial code, and updated the manufacturer to VAO (Varta). Cleared the Battery management error code (on the same screen) and monitored it for 48 hours and all good holding 12.7v when off.
