Introducing supply-side and enabling environment interventions alongside end-user subsidies not only makes off-grid solar accessible to a greater proportion of the population, but also levels the playing field and lowers operational costs for off-grid energy service providers with a proven capability of reaching lower-income, rural populations.
Does Togo offer a subsidy for off-grid solar power?
It should also be noted that some companies among the associations between them carry out projects with the communities for their access to electricity. Since March 2019, the Government of Togo is offering subsidies to Togolese households to cover the cost of off-grid solar power systems.
Does Togo have electricity?
While around four-fifths of urban areas now have access to electricity, only around a tenth of Togo's rural areas are electrified. The electrification rate is lowest in Savanes, the country's northernmost region. In off-grid areas, electricity is rarely used for productive purposes.
In Togo, rural electricity projects are steered by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Agency. Several companies, including BBOXX, EDF, and Sun King-Soleva, are actively working to promote universal access to electricity by developing innovative technologies and providing solar energy services to communities not connected to the grid.
Why does Togo need a climate-friendly rural electrification system?
This leads to insufficient value creation and a weak social infrastructure in rural areas. The aim of Togo's Government is therefore to ensure universal access to electricity by 2030. Climate-friendly rural electrification, bearing in mind economic and social factors, has promoted access to basic social services for disadvantaged population groups.

Can Togo achieve 100% electricity coverage in 2021?
In 2021, the Cizo was complemented by the Tinga Fund, a mechanism to facilitate access to electricity through the provision of repayable government grants to rural people. In its first phase, the project should reach 33,000 households. Togo hopes to achieve 100% electricity coverage by 2030, against 59% now.
